Rare Akan Bronze Arm Ring, Baule Culture, Côte d’Ivoire ,Provenance Hans Himmelheber & Egon Guenther
This rare and substantial bronze arm ring is a 19th-century prestige ornament from the Akan cultural sphere, most probably Baule, originating in present-day Côte d’Ivoire. Circa 19th Century
Cast using the lost-wax technique, the bracelet is formed as a heavy circular torque and decorated with alternating bands of cross-hatched panels, incised diagonal and X-motifs, and smooth polished sections.
One terminal features raised nodular elements typical of Akan abstracted symbolic metalwork. The scale, weight, and construction indicate use as a high-arm ornament associated with wealth, rank, and social authority rather than everyday wear. The surface displays a deep, stable patina with wear consistent with age and ceremonial handling.
