This authentic wooden headrest originates from the Turkana people of northern Kenya, a pastoralist culture renowned for producing sculptural yet highly functional personal objects. Hand-carved from a single block of wood, the headrest features a generously curved saddle-shaped top, supported by a single vertical central rib rising from a smooth domed base.
A classic and immediately recognisable Turkana form.

Among the Turkana, headrests were essential personal possessions, used while sleeping to protect carefully styled hair and frequently carried during seasonal movement. Beyond their practical function, such objects also conveyed individual identity, maturity, and social status. The surface of this example displays a warm, naturally developed patina, with softened edges, visible tool marks, and wear consistent with prolonged traditional use.
Dating to the early to mid-20th century

Provenance: Egon Guenther Family Collection
