Yoruba Iron Dance Rattle Bracelet / Anklet – Nigeria, West Africa – Egon Guenther Collection
A hand-forged iron rattle bracelet or anklet attributed to the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria (West Africa). The oval band carries groups of loose iron rings that gently strike against the metal frame when moved, creating a soft rhythmic jingle. Pieces like this were worn during dance and ceremonial performance, where sound, movement and ornament worked together as part of the visual presence of the wearer.
The form is simple but purposeful — shaped iron with hammered swelling sections and freely moving rings. The patina shows long use and age, giving the piece a strong sculptural character even when not worn. Today it reads as both an object of cultural expression and a striking metalwork form.
