Ducky Cap Lifters, Kirkby Beard & Co Paris & Later Example
The earlier cap lifter is formed as the characteristic stylised duck’s head and retains its underside lifting plate marked “DUCKY – KIRKBY BEARD & Co. PARIS.” This maker-marked version represents the earlier form and is distinguishable from subsequent Ducky cap lifters carrying the simplified Paris marking.
The second example is a later production of the same recognisable Ducky form, marked “DUCKY PARIS.” Although closely related in design and function, differences in manufacture and marking distinguish it from the earlier Kirkby Beard & Co. version.
Together, the two examples provide an interesting comparison of the development of this French figural cap lifter across the 20th century.
The early Kirkby Beard & Co. type is a similar example to the one offered as Lot 152 in the Christie’s South Kensington Corkscrews sale, 21 May 2002, where it carried an estimate of €140–160, confirming its established position within specialist corkscrew and barware collecting circles
