Attributed Zulu / Nguni Hand-Carved Wooden Communal Serving Trough – Southern Africa, Early–Mid 20th Century
Hand-carved from a single block of hardwood and attributed to the Zulu / Nguni peoples of KwaZulu-Natal, Southern Africa, this elongated platter with pierced side handles and integral feet corresponds to documented ugqoko type serving vessels. Such platters were used in domestic and ceremonial settings where cooked meat was placed centrally and eaten communally.
The deep interior smoothing, handling wear and dark burnished patina indicate extended practical use rather than later decorative manufacture. Comparable handled meat platters are recorded in ethnographic museum collections illustrating traditional Nguni communal dining customs.
