Akan Cast Bronze Cuff Bracelet, Probably Baoulé – Côte d’Ivoire or Ghana – 20th Century – Egon Guenther Collection
A substantial cast bronze cuff bracelet of wide cylindrical form, open at the reverse. The exterior is organised into four broad horizontal ribs divided by shallow channels. At the frontal axis, a vertical register of four circular medallions interrupts the ribbing, each composed of finely incised concentric arc motifs.
The ornament is cast integrally using the lost-wax (cire perdue) technique. The concentric circular devices and ribbed construction are characteristic of metal ornaments produced within the Akan cultural sphere of southern Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, and closely comparable examples are frequently attributed to Baoulé workshops.
The bracelet is solid and notably heavy (162 g), suggesting use as a prestige ornament. The surface presents a stable dark brown patina with areas of oxidation and handling wear consistent with age.
