Rudolf Scharpf German Abstract Print, Black Ink on Paper — Egon Guenther Collection
Pickup currently not available
A monochrome print by German painter and printmaker Rudolf Scharpf (1919–2014), comprising interlocking abstract and figure-like forms articulated through contrasting black areas and fine linear textures. A pencil inscription, apparently including the artist’s signature and the date 1957, appears along the lower margin. The work comes from the collection of Egon Guenther, who exhibited Scharpf at his galleries in Mannheim and Johannesburg. The Johannesburg gallery’s exhibition of Scharpf’s woodcuts, etchings and monotypes opened on 21 August 1957. art-archives-southafrica.com
Printed in black ink on cream paper, the work has surface characteristics consistent with relief printing, although the precise process requires examination of the original sheet. Paper toning, scattered spotting and creasing remain visible. Thomas Guenther had the work reframed in South Africa; research notes attached to the backing document the artist’s gallery association. Its established family ownership is relevant to collectors of German modern prints and the history of the Egon Guenther galleries. Exhibition of this particular impression has not been established.
