The Yankee No. 2 is a clamp-mounted mechanical corkscrew developed by Raymond Gilchrist and manufactured by the Gilchrist Company of Newark, New Jersey, USA, under U.S. Patent No. 857,992 granted on 25 June 1907. Designed for attachment to a counter, bar or workbench, the mechanism uses a guided worm and compound lever action to withdraw corks efficiently while remaining permanently mounted. The cast handle retains the original YANKEE No. 2 marking, allowing immediate identification of the model.
This example is complete and retains its original mechanical components, including the clamp assembly and operating mechanism. The worm remains straight and serviceable, the joints function correctly with normal age-related play, and the metal surfaces display honest wear consistent with age and use. An increasingly desirable example of early twentieth-century American mechanical corkscrew design suitable for both collectors and practical demonstration.
