Oromo Headrest – Ethiopia – Hand Carved Wooden Neck Rest
This carved wooden headrest originates from Ethiopia and is attributed to Oromo cultural groups of the Arsi region. Such objects functioned as portable sleeping supports, allowing the user to rest the head while protecting elaborate hairstyles and avoiding ground contact. Headrests of this type were personal objects carried during travel and used in domestic contexts.
The present example is carved from a single block of hardwood with a curved upper support pierced with ventilation holes and raised on a cylindrical stem above a flared conical base decorated with incised geometric banding. The form and decorative treatment correspond to Ethiopian pastoral headrest traditions documented in museum collections. The surface shows consistent age patina and handling wear, supporting its use-life and authenticity.
