Carved wooden headrest attributed to the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, worked from a single solid piece of hardwood. The form comprises a rectangular base with twin vertical supports rising to a curved neck platform with incised geometric decoration to the terminals and upper edges. Such headrests functioned as personal neck supports during rest and were used to preserve coiffure styles. Comparable examples are documented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, and Smithsonian Institution.

Condition is consistent with age and prolonged use, showing naturally worn edges, surface abrasions, softened contours, darkened patina, and minor losses to the carved terminal projections. Structurally stable.

Circa late 19th to early 20th century.

Provenance: Egon Guenther Collection, by inheritance to Thomas Guenther Collection, Netherlands.
