Jacob Hendrik Pierneef Mixed Media Landscape Drawing “Wildenboom”, South Africa, 1912
Pickup currently not available
This framed mixed media landscape drawing by Jacob Hendrik Pierneef depicts a stylised South African landscape with the geometric structure, linear tree formations, and ordered spatial treatment associated with the artist’s early period. Executed in pencil and mixed media on paper and titled Wildenboom, the work is signed and dated 1912. The composition demonstrates Pierneef’s developing visual language prior to the more formalised monumental landscapes of his mature career, retaining the restrained palette and exploratory line work characteristic of his early studies.
Widely regarded as one of the foundational figures of twentieth-century South African art, Pierneef played a significant role in defining a distinctly South African modernist landscape tradition. His works remain central to major museum, corporate, and private collections, while important paintings and drawings continue to achieve strong results through leading auction houses including Strauss & Co, Bonhams, and Sotheby’s-associated South African sales. The present example is housed in a later custom frame with silvered textured moulding and neutral mount. Surface inspection through glass shows expected age-related toning and minor handling wear consistent with period paper works. Provenance includes the Egon Guenther Collection, later descending within the Guenther family.
