This large abstract tapestry was designed by the South African artist Hannes Haars (1927–2007) and later hand-woven in Portugal by the Manufactura de Tapeçarias de Portalegre (Portalegre Tapestry Manufactory). The composition reflects the international modernist language of bold geometry and flat colour fields, and exemplifies the period’s important cross-disciplinary practice in which an artist’s graphic design is translated into a woven medium by specialist ateliers.

The tapestry is woven in wool and retains its Portalegre workshop label with recorded dimensions and edition/registration details, together with the artist’s name as noted on the label. Condition is consistent with display and age; colours remain strong and the weave appears structurally sound. Portalegre works are collected for their dual authorship: the artist’s original design and the workshop’s highly controlled hand-weaving process, resulting in a finished textile that functions as a durable, exhibitable work of modern art.
