This carved wooden headrest originates from the Gurage cultural region of southern Ethiopia, where such objects served as personal sleeping supports. Headrests of this form were used to elevate the head during rest while preserving elaborate hairstyles and protecting them from disturbance. Similar examples are documented among several Ethiopian groups including the Gurage, Sidama, and neighbouring communities of the southern highlands.

The present example is carved from a single piece of hardwood and displays a characteristic flaring profile rising from a circular foot to a curved crescent sleeping platform. The polished upper surface shows wear consistent with prolonged use. Variations of this form are preserved in museum collections and ethnographic studies of Ethiopian domestic material culture. Its well-balanced proportions and evident use-wear make it a representative example of traditional Ethiopian headrest carving.
