Bakelite, steel, and leather.

Union-Castle Line, British / South African maritime souvenir.

Circa 1937 to 1950s.

The pressed leather pouch marked “R.M.M.V. Cape Town Castle” confirms production for the Royal Mail Motor Vessel operating on the Southampton–South Africa route, including wartime service.

A rare surviving example of mid-20th-century shipboard novelty barware.

A RARE UNION-CASTLE LINE MARITIME SOUVENIR

This googly-eyed novelty corkscrew and beer opener set is a charming survivor of mid-20th century ocean travel, produced as a souvenir for passengers aboard Union-Castle Line Royal Mail Motor Vessels operating between Southampton and Cape Town.

The set is housed in its original stitched leather pouch, pressed (not handwritten) with R.M.M.V. Cape Town Castle, a vessel launched in 1937, active throughout World War II, and in service until 1967, carrying both civilians and troops on the vital Britain–South Africa route.

Playful in design yet historically grounded, these novelty bar tools reflect the optimism, craftsmanship, and maritime culture of the late 1930s–1950s, making them highly desirable to collectors of corkscrews, ocean-liner memorabilia, and Union-Castle ephemera.
