Early Southern Tswana Prestige Basket for Sale – Finely Coiled Natural Fibre Basket, Botswana / South Africa, c.1930–1955
Pickup currently not available
This finely coiled Southern Tswana prestige basket is attributed to the Tswana peoples of present-day Botswana and northern South Africa and dates to approximately 1930–1955. Shallow prestige baskets of this form were valued domestic objects, admired for their exceptionally fine workmanship, carefully balanced proportions and precisely executed geometric decoration created during the weaving process.
Constructed entirely by hand from natural plant fibres using the traditional coiling technique, the basket retains excellent structural integrity and attractive age patina. The interior and exterior display harmonious geometric motifs produced with dyed fibres rather than applied decoration. Its preservation, craftsmanship and documented provenance make it a desirable example for collectors of African basketry and ethnographic art.
