An Asante figurative goldweight representing a side-blown war horn with a braided carrying handle and six human mandibles arranged around its broad end. Full-sized elephant-tusk horns were sounded during royal processions, chiefly ceremonies and warfare. The mandibles signified military victory and were understood symbolically to proclaim the chief’s praises through the voices of defeated enemies.

Individually cast in brass by the lost-wax process, the miniature preserves the horn’s lateral blowing aperture, raised binding bands, braided handle and attached mandibles. The surface displays casting irregularities, wear and naturally developed patination consistent with age. Closely related war-horn goldweights appear in museum collections and in Margaret Webster Plass, African Miniatures: The Goldweights of the Ashanti, 1967, plates 133–134.
