This brass compound microscope was manufactured by the London optical instrument makers R. & J. Beck Ltd., one of Britain’s most respected scientific instrument firms during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Designed for laboratory and educational microscopy, the instrument features a monocular tube, rack-and-pinion coarse focus, mechanical stage clips, mirror illumination, and interchangeable objectives typical of professional microscopes produced during this period.
Constructed primarily in lacquered brass, the microscope reflects the precision engineering and durable craftsmanship associated with British optical manufacturing. The instrument bears the engraved maker’s mark “R. & J. Beck Ltd. London” together with serial number 21696. Light wear, surface patination, and small marks consistent with age and professional use are visible. The microscope is accompanied by its fitted wooden storage case (Lock missing).
Instruments by Beck are widely collected as examples of historic scientific apparatus and early laboratory technology.
