Authentic West African bronze currency bracelet attributed to the Baule–Akan cultural region of Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), circa 19th century. Traditional trade wealth object used as bride-wealth and ceremonial adornment. Provenance: Egon Guenther Collection

Such bracelets functioned simultaneously as ornament and currency — a portable form of wealth used in bride-wealth payments, trade exchange, and prestige display.

Within Baule society, metal objects held both economic and spiritual value. Wealth metals such as bronze and brass signified authority and were worn during ceremonies, funerals, and community gatherings.

Comparable examples are preserved in major ethnographic collections including the Musée du Quai Branly (Paris) and the British Museum, where they are classified as Akan currency bracelets or prestige anklets.
