Long-handled ukhezo serving spoon attributed to a Zulu carver from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The deep oval bowl, elongated handle, paired blackened bands and fluted terminal relate to documented Zulu spoon-carving traditions. Comparable carved wooden spoons are held in the British Museum and the Harn Museum of Art.

Carved and hollowed from a single piece of dense indigenous hardwood, the spoon is finished with incised, fluted and blackened pokerwork decoration. The clean bowl and well-preserved surface show no evident signs of functional use, suggesting that it may have been produced for the decorative or collectors’ market. The wood may be kiaat.
