West African Lost-Wax Cast Brass Bracelet with Stylised Human Face Terminal – Hans Himmelheber Provenance
Pickup currently not available
This cast brass bracelet originates from West Africa and is distinguished by its stylised anthropomorphic terminal depicting a human face. The open circular form and integral sculptural decoration are characteristic of traditional West African metalworking traditions in which personal ornaments served both decorative and social functions. While a precise cultural attribution remains uncertain, the form is consistent with brass adornments produced within the wider Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire region.
The bracelet was individually produced using the lost-wax casting process, a long-established metalworking technique practised throughout West Africa. The surface displays an attractive aged patina together with wear and oxidation consistent with age and use. The painted "HH" inventory mark identifies the piece as having passed through the collection of the noted ethnographer and collector Hans Himmelheber before entering the Egon Guenther Collection and subsequently descending within the Guenther family.
