Hand carved from dense African hardwood, this substantial mortar and pestle set was traditionally used by the Venda people of Limpopo to pound maize and grains. The vessel features a band of small punctate carvings below the rim and triangular bosses above the base are motifs characteristic of Venda domestic woodwork. Its smooth interior and dark patina attest to decades of daily use. Functional yet sculptural, it embodies the craftsmanship and cultural heritage of rural South African life.
