A South African private-press edition of The Rooinek by Herman Charles Bosman, printed and published by Egon Guenther in Johannesburg in May 1981. The volume contains one original colour woodcut and fourteen original wood engravings by Cecil Skotnes, each signed and numbered by the artist. This is copy 26 of 75 numbered copies; ten artist’s proofs and eight hors commerce copies brought the complete edition to 93. The book combines Bosman’s literary work with original South African printmaking.
The illustrations were printed from the original blocks on Zerkall Buetten paper by Egon Guenther. Nicholas Pasotti hand-set the text in 24-point Bembo, and Peter Carstens hand-bound the volume in quarter Oasis goatskin with striped paper-covered boards and a matching slipcase. Retained in the publisher’s family collection and inherited by his son, this copy has direct family provenance. The owner reports that it has remained unread and stored since inheritance.
