HH 6 Prestige Arm Currency Bracelet Central Africa, Lower Congo region, 19th century
Prestige Arm Currency Bracelet
Central Africa, Lower Congo region
19th century
Cast brass / copper alloy (lost-wax)
This monumental arm currency exemplifies Central African systems of value in which wealth was worn, displayed, and secured. Cast in heavy copper alloy with a hinged locking mechanism, such objects functioned as stores of wealth, media of exchange, and markers of social rank and alliance. The bracelet was documented and marked “HH 6” by the German ethnologist Hans Himmelheber during his Central African research. Retaining its original field marking, the object preserves a rare link between material culture and early 20th-century ethnographic study.
