Elpel Highlander Bagpiper Figural Corkscrew & Bottle Opener, Brass & Steel, England, c. 1950s

English Elpel figural combination corkscrew and bottle opener of straight-pull form, dating to the mid-20th century. The substantial cast-brass handle depicts a Scottish Highlander playing bagpipes, with moulded costume and instrument detail. A steel shank terminates in a long helical worm; the rectangular aperture incorporated between the figure's legs forms a crown-cap bottle opener. Operation is mechanically simple: the worm is screwed directly into the cork and the cast figure serves as the handgrip for straight extraction.

The example retains clear cast detail with age-related patination, surface wear and oxidation. The steel shank and worm show expected wear and oxidation but appear complete, with the worm retaining its form and point. There are no hinges or moving mechanical joints. The integral cap opener is complete. Suitable as a functional collector's example, although careful occasional use is preferable to regular service.
