Dan-Region Copper-Alloy Bangle, Western Côte d’Ivoire, Early–Mid-20th Century
Pickup currently not available
A rigid closed-form copper-alloy bangle, probably originating in western Côte d’Ivoire or the neighbouring Liberian border region. Comparable metal ornaments are associated with the Dan and neighbouring communities, although the absence of an original field record prevents a definitive cultural attribution. The bangle was probably worn as personal adornment, potentially also communicating identity or status.
The irregular rounded band was individually cast, probably by the lost-wax process, and subsequently hand-finished. Small raised projections punctuate the exterior. The surface retains a dark brown patina, exposed warmer metal, casting irregularities and wear consistent with age and handling. Its painted HH collection mark and provenance from the Hans Himmelheber Collection add particular significance for collectors of West African metalwork.
