This cast bronze four-bell anklet is attributed to the Dan people of western Côte d’Ivoire and eastern Liberia. Formed as a circular assembly of four substantial globular bells joined by narrow waisted connectors, the anklet contains internal clappers within each chamber. Such ornaments were worn around the lower leg during masked performances, initiation events, and public ceremonial gatherings, where their weight and sound reinforced movement and presence.

The anklet was produced using the lost wax casting technique (cire perdue), evident in the unified casting and surface modelling. The dark brown patina with areas of oxidation is consistent with age and prolonged handling. The scale, weight, and structural configuration correspond to early 20th century Dan metalwork made for local ceremonial use. The painted inventory number “HH 020” relates to the Hans Himmelheber collection, supporting documented European collection history.
