Cast Bronze Currency Bracelet Lower Niger Region Nigeria to Late 19th Century
This substantial cast bronze currency bracelet, formed as a tall cylindrical cuff with longitudinal opening, is attributed to the Lower Niger region of Nigeria (Igbo / Ibibio cultural sphere). Unlike the widely known horseshoe-shaped Atlantic trade manillas, this example represents a band-form or cuff-type currency bracelet, worn on the forearm or ankle. Such objects functioned simultaneously as adornment, portable wealth, and units of exchange within regional trade and bride wealth systems.
Circa: Mid to late 19th century (possibly early 20th century)
PROVENANCE, Egon Guenther Collection.
