Carl Hollweg Geared Collapsing Corkscrew, Nickel-Plated Steel, Germany, c.1891–1910
Pickup currently not available
A German collapsing pocket corkscrew based on Carl Hollweg’s patented design, constructed from channelled nickel-plated steel sections. Four hinged sections form a geared toggle-joint handle: folded together, they enclose and protect the worm; opened out, they form a transverse handle for inserting the worm and withdrawing the cork. US Patent No. 447,185 was granted to Hollweg of Barmen on 24 February 1891.
The corkscrew is complete, with an intact steel worm and articulated handle. It retains age-related plating loss, surface wear, localised oxidation and small green deposits around several joints. The design is documented in Donald A. Bull’s The Ultimate Corkscrew Book, while a comparable VALS-BÉATRIX advertising example is illustrated in Donald A. Bull, Joseph C. Paradi and Bertrand B. Giulian’s World-Class Corkscrews.
