The Monopol Universal is a German bell-type mechanical corkscrew incorporating a tapered open frame and a ball-bearing thrust mechanism beneath the handle. Marked MONOPOL, UNIVERSAL, D.R.G.M. and GERMANY, the design combines cork-extraction and bottle-opening functions. The bell rests over the bottle neck, while rotation of the handle drives the worm into the cork and operates the extraction mechanism.

Condition:
This example shows substantial wear and loss to its original nickel plating, with exposed base metal, uneven discolouration, oxidation and areas of surface pitting. These are visible on the frame, bell and handle assembly. The steel worm also shows darkening and surface oxidation; its pointed tip is present. The handle decoration and lettering remain discernible.

The photographs form an important part of the condition description and show the worn finish from several angles.
