West African Cast Brass Currency Bracelet (Manilla Type), Dan or Baule Attributed, Côte d’Ivoire / Ghana
Pickup currently not available
A substantial cast brass currency bracelet of open crescent form, belonging to the West African manilla tradition and attributed to the Dan or Baule cultural sphere of present-day Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. The heavy construction, braided central ridge, and finely hatched surface decoration correspond closely to regional variants of currency bracelets that functioned both as personal adornment and as a recognised store of wealth. Such objects circulated within local exchange systems while also signalling status and identity.
The bracelet is cast using the lost-wax technique, evident in its solid weight, subtle casting irregularities, and individually finished surface. The dark, consistent patina and visible wear indicate age and use. This example represents a more elaborate, locally produced form within the broader manilla category, distinct from simpler European trade types. It is best classified as a decorated regional manilla-type bracelet attributed to the Dan–Baule cultural area.
