African Wooden Carvings

This collection presents carved works by South African artists Cecil Skotnes, Hannes Haarhoff, and Wopko Jensma, each associated with the development of modernist carving practices in Southern Africa during the mid- to late 20th century.

Working primarily in wood and linocut-derived carving techniques, these artists explored form, surface, and narrative through reductive processes. Cecil Skotnes (1926–2009), a central figure in South African modernism and a leading force behind the Polly Street Art Centre, developed a distinctive visual language rooted in African sculptural traditions and linear abstraction. Hannes Haarhoff (1943–2012) is recognised for his technically refined carvings and prints, often marked by precise line work and structured compositions. Wopko Jensma (1939–1993), known for his multidisciplinary practice, incorporated carving and printmaking into a broader expressive framework reflecting the cultural and political context of his time.

These artists were, at various points, supported and promoted through the Linksfield based gallery of Egon Guenther, contributing to their visibility among collectors and within the broader South African art market. The works presented here reflect that historical context and are collected for their material quality, artistic significance, and place within the narrative of South African modernist carving.
