Four-legged hardwood bowl with opposing lug handles, carved from a single block, South Africa, 20th century.
Pickup currently not available
A large four-legged wooden utility bowl, carved from a single block of dense hardwood and raised on four integral supports. The elongated trough form terminates at both ends in projecting lug handles, one of which is pierced, indicating provision for lifting, suspension, or securing.
The monolithic construction—bowl, legs, and lugs formed from the same block—reflects traditional carving practice. The scale and form indicate a domestic vessel used for food preparation, storage, or communal serving.
The surface shows developed patina, with a darkened exterior and a smoothed interior from repeated handling and use. Tool marks remain visible across the exterior and underside. Wear is consistent along the feet and lug edges; the pierced lug shows abrasion around the opening. No structural cracking observed. Stable and usable.
Circa 20th century.
