This corkscrew belongs to the “Duck-Bill” mechanical family, a German design associated with W. Sommers Registered Design No. 84,057 of 21 July 1897. The mechanism uses a two-arm open bell frame shaped like a duck’s bill, guiding a central worm driven by a fixed T-handle spindle. During extraction the curved steel arms brace against the cork while the worm withdraws it along the centre axis.

The present example is unmarked, a configuration also documented in collector literature. The turned wooden T-handle is mounted to a steel shaft with a forged open bell frame and centre worm. Surface wear consistent with age is visible on the steel and handle, with minor patina and tool marks from manufacture. The worm remains straight and pointed and the mechanism remains mechanically usable.
